Manungkot Viewpoint: Nepal's Sunrise Above the Clouds
A guide to Manungkot near Pokhara: how to get there, where to stay, the famous cloud-sea sunrise and the best time to visit this hidden hilltop.
Manungkot Viewpoint: Nepal's Sunrise Above the Clouds
Some of Nepal's most magical experiences do not need a flight, a permit or a fortnight of trekking. Manungkot is one of them: a small hilltop village in Tanahu district that has quietly become one of the country's most photogenic sunrise spots, a place where you stand above an endless sea of clouds and watch the sun set it on fire. It sits about 160 km west of Kathmandu and just 90 minutes from Pokhara, which makes it a perfect add-on to an Annapurna trip. Our team loves recommending it for travellers who want a slow, soulful night in the hills.
Why Manungkot is worth the detour
For years Manungkot was a sleepy farming village living on agriculture and animal husbandry. The arrival of a view tower and basic guesthouses changed that, and social media did the rest, those photos of a glowing cloud-sea are no exaggeration. It is now a sought-after escape, yet still calm enough to feel like a local secret. If you have just finished a trek in the Annapurna region, swinging by Manungkot for one night on the way back is an easy, rewarding decision.

How to get to Manungkot from Pokhara
From Pokhara's Prithvi Chowk, take a local bus toward Damauli (around NPR 200). About 15 minutes before Damauli, watch for the Manungkot turn-off signboard, that is your stop. From there, onward transport can be patchy, so the smartest move is to call your hotel ahead to arrange a shared jeep (around NPR 150 per person, roughly 30 minutes uphill).
Our tip: if you can, reserve a private jeep straight to Manungkot Hill or bring your own vehicle. Local transport timing rarely matches your arrival, and the last stretch of road is partly rough and dusty.

Where to stay
Booking a night package at a hilltop hotel is the easy, good-value option, expect something like welcome tea and popcorn on arrival, dinner, accommodation and breakfast bundled together (commonly around NPR 1,400 per person). Evenings are quiet and chilly; dinner is usually a hearty, authentic dal bhat. Settle in early, because the real show starts before dawn.

The famous sunrise
Set an alarm for around 5 AM. The view tower is just a five-minute walk from most hotels, and a small tea stall serves early risers. Find your spot, wrap up against the cold wind, and wait. As the sun climbs, the entire Damauli valley below vanishes under thick cloud, and you realise you are standing above it. The sky turns red, orange and gold, and a well-built stairway lets you descend toward the clouds for an even more immersive view. The cloud-sea typically lingers until around 9 AM, slowly dispersing to reveal the city, roads and forests beneath, a transformation that is as mesmerising as the sunrise itself.
Best time to visit Manungkot
Aim for autumn (September to November) or spring (March to May). These months bring clear skies, pleasant temperatures and the best odds of that thick sea of clouds. Other months can be rainy or simply too cold and cloudy to deliver the view.
A reminder of how close paradise can be
Manungkot is a rare chance to slow down, breathe deeply and reconnect with the mountains, no expensive flights or elaborate logistics required. The warm hospitality, simple meals and gentle pace are as much a part of the magic as the sunrise. Sometimes the most beautiful places really are just a few hours away.
Make Manungkot part of your Nepal trip
Manungkot pairs beautifully with an Annapurna-region trek or a Pokhara stay. If you would like us to build it into a wider itinerary, our local team is happy to help.
