Panch Pokhari Trek: Sacred Lakes North of Kathmandu

Plan the Panch Pokhari trek to Nepal's five sacred high-altitude lakes: route, difficulty, Janai Purnima pilgrimage and best season.

Panch Pokhari Trek: Sacred Lakes North of Kathmandu

Panch Pokhari Trek: Sacred Lakes North of Kathmandu

Panch Pokhari literally translates as "five lakes" — a cluster of alpine waters set at 4,100 metres in the Jugal Himalayan range in Sindhupalchok district, north of Kathmandu. The lakes are sacred to Hindu and Buddhist communities and largely missed by international trekkers, which means you get high-altitude lake views, an authentic pilgrimage destination, and the kind of empty trail experience that no longer exists on the Annapurna Circuit. Here is how to plan it.

Where Panch Pokhari sits

The five lakes rest in a high alpine basin in Sindhupalchok district, north-east of Kathmandu. The trail climbs through Tamang and Sherpa villages, dense rhododendron forest, and broad alpine meadows where yaks graze. Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m) rises directly to the north on clear days, and the Jugal Himal provides the panoramic backdrop in every direction.

How long it takes

Most trekkers complete the route in 4-7 days depending on starting point and pace. The classic itinerary:

  • Drive Kathmandu to Chautara or Bhotang
  • Trek through Nasimpati and Hile Bhanjyang
  • Reach Panch Pokhari (4,100 m)
  • Side-explore the lakes, possible day hike to higher ridges
  • Descend by a different route back to road head
  • Drive back to Kathmandu

This makes Panch Pokhari one of the few legitimate high-altitude treks in Nepal that does not require a domestic flight. You drive in, you drive out.

Religious significance

The lakes are sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. During Janai Purnima — the full moon of Shrawan (typically August) — thousands of pilgrims walk from the lowlands to bathe in the lakes, perform rituals at the small shrines around them, and renew their sacred threads. The atmosphere transforms: prayer flags strung across rocks, temporary tarp shelters, devotees performing puja into the night. Going during Janai Purnima is a remarkable cultural experience, though it is the only time of year the trail is crowded.

Beyond the festival, the trek remains a place of quiet spiritual presence. Many local trekkers come simply to pay respect, sit by the lakes, and leave a small offering.

Difficulty

Moderate. There is no technical climbing, but you are climbing to 4,100 m and walking for 4-7 days, often on steep forested trails. Basic hiking fitness is enough. Acclimatisation matters — we recommend at least one extra night at intermediate altitude before pushing to the lakes.

Wildlife and flora

The route crosses rhododendron, pine and oak forest in the lower sections and alpine meadow above 3,500 m. Wildlife includes Himalayan birds, musk deer in the upper forest, and red pandas in the rhododendron belt (rarely seen, but they are there). Spring brings dramatic rhododendron blooms across the entire mid-section of the trek.

Best season

  • Spring (March-May): wildflowers, fresh greenery, mild temperatures
  • Autumn (September-November): the clearest mountain views and most stable weather
  • Janai Purnima (typically August): the cultural high point, but crowded and monsoon-wet
  • Winter (December-February): stunning snow conditions but seriously cold; some sections become impassable

Our standard recommendation is autumn for first-timers, spring for those who want flowers, and Janai Purnima for cultural travellers willing to put up with rain and crowds.

What to pack

A condensed list for the Panch Pokhari trek:

  • Sturdy waterproof trekking boots, well broken in
  • 25-35 L daypack
  • Sleeping bag rated to -10°C (lodges are very basic above 3,000 m, some sections are camping)
  • Down jacket and waterproof outer shell
  • Base, mid and warm hat layers
  • Trekking poles
  • Head torch
  • Personal first-aid kit including altitude meds
  • Water purification (Aquatabs or SteriPen)
  • High-SPF sunblock and lip balm
  • 2-3 litres water capacity

Permits and logistics

You will need a TIMS card (NPR 2,000) and the Langtang National Park entry fee (NPR 3,000), as part of the trek crosses national park land. A licensed guide is recommended though not strictly mandatory for group trekkers.

The trail is far less developed than Annapurna or Langtang. Accommodation is basic — local homestays in the lower villages, with simple shelter or camping required for the upper sections. Bring your own sleeping bag regardless of where you stay.

Why we recommend Panch Pokhari

Three honest reasons:

  1. Untouched character. The trail genuinely has not been remade by international tourism. You will likely meet more domestic Nepali trekkers than foreign ones.

  2. No flight required. Unlike EBC, Mustang, Dolpo and Kanchenjunga, you reach the trailhead by road from Kathmandu — no Lukla-style weather cancellations to worry about.

  3. Cultural depth. Panch Pokhari is a working pilgrimage site, not a tourist attraction. Going here puts you in proximity to living Nepali religious practice rather than the manicured Buddhist heritage of the famous routes.

How to combine it

Panch Pokhari pairs naturally with several other Helambu and Langtang region treks:

We can run Panch Pokhari as a standalone 5-7 day trek or combine it with adjacent Helambu and Langtang routes for a deeper 12-14 day experience. Browse our Helambu and Langtang collection or contact our Kathmandu team for a custom 2026 plan.
