10 Best Day Hikes Around the Kathmandu Valley
10 best day hikes around Kathmandu Valley. Shivapuri, Phulchowki, Nagarkot, Namobuddha, Chandragiri - quick escapes from the city.
10 Best Day Hikes Around the Kathmandu Valley
Kathmandu sits in a 30km-wide valley ringed by forested ridges. Those ridges offer some of the most accessible mountain hiking in Asia - day trips from the city centre with snow-peak panoramas, ancient temples, dense forest and traditional villages. Perfect for acclimatising before a big trek, for travellers with only a few days in Nepal, or for residents looking for a weekend escape.
These are our 10 favourite day hikes from Kathmandu, in rough order of popularity.
1. Shivapuri Peak Hike
Altitude: 2,732m
Distance: 16 km round trip
Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: 6-7 hours
Transport: Taxi to Budhanilkantha (north Kathmandu)
The highest peak in Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, just 12 km north of central Kathmandu. The trail climbs through dense oak and rhododendron forest to a summit with views of Ganesh, Langtang, Jugal and Rolwaling ranges on clear mornings. The Shivapuri Baba statue at the top is a Hindu pilgrimage site. Wildlife: 300+ bird species, occasional musk deer, wild boar.

2. Nagarkot Sunrise with Changunarayan Hike
Altitude: 2,175m (Nagarkot)
Distance: 9 km hiking + drive
Difficulty: Easy
Duration: Full day (overnight in Nagarkot for sunrise)
Transport: Taxi to Nagarkot, then hike down to Changunarayan, taxi back
Nagarkot is Kathmandu's most famous sunrise viewpoint - on a clear October-November morning you can see the Himalaya from Annapurna to Everest. The downhill hike to Changunarayan (a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Nepal's oldest stone inscriptions) takes 3-4 hours through pine forest and traditional Newari villages.

3. Phulchowki Hike
Altitude: 2,782m
Distance: 12 km round trip
Difficulty: Moderate-strenuous
Duration: 5-6 hours
Transport: Taxi to Godawari Botanical Garden
The highest hill rim of the Kathmandu Valley. Steep climb through dense forest home to 300 bird species and 100 butterfly species. The summit gives views of eight Himalayan ranges including Everest, Langtang, Ganesh, Manaslu and Annapurna on clear days. Best done in October-March.

4. Namobuddha to Balthali Village Hike
Altitude: 1,750m
Distance: 10 km
Difficulty: Easy
Duration: 4-5 hours plus overnight
Transport: Taxi to Namobuddha
The sacred Buddhist site where the prince who became Buddha is said to have offered his flesh to a starving tigress. A beautiful day hike through Tamang and Newari villages, terraced rice fields and pine forest down to the rural village of Balthali (good lodges). The Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery at the start is one of the most active in Nepal.
5. Chisapani Nagarkot Trek (2 days)
Altitude: 2,200m (Chisapani)
Distance: 18 km over 2 days
Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: 2 days, 1 night
Transport: Taxi to Sundarijal, return from Nagarkot
A two-day classic combining the eastern ridge of the Kathmandu Valley. Day 1: Sundarijal to Chisapani (4-5 hours) through Shivapuri National Park. Day 2: Chisapani to Nagarkot (5-6 hours) along ridges with mountain views. Overnight at Chisapani in a basic lodge.
6. Chandragiri to Champa Devi Hike
Altitude: 2,551m (Chandragiri)
Distance: 14 km
Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: 6 hours
Transport: Taxi to Chandragiri cable car base station
Take the cable car up Chandragiri Hill (the historical viewpoint from which King Prithvi Narayan Shah first saw the Kathmandu Valley before conquering it). Walk along the forested ridge to Champa Devi Temple, then descend to Taudaha Lake (the lake where Manjushri allegedly drained the original Kathmandu Lake). Mountain views throughout.
7. Nagarjun and Jamacho Gompa Hike
Altitude: 2,095m
Distance: 9 km round trip
Difficulty: Easy
Duration: 4-5 hours
Transport: Taxi to Nagarjun gate (Balaju)
Inside Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, this is the most accessible city-edge hike. The summit holds the Jamacho Gompa - a Buddhist monastery with a meditation cave once used by famous lamas. Prayer flags ring the top and the panoramic Kathmandu Valley view is one of the best. Popular Saturday morning escape for locals.
8. Dhulikhel-Namobuddha-Panauti Hike
Altitude: 1,550m (Dhulikhel)
Distance: 18 km
Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: Full day or 2 days
Transport: Local bus or taxi to Dhulikhel
Three destinations in one day: Dhulikhel (Newari hilltop town with mountain views), Namobuddha (sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site, 3 hours' walk from Dhulikhel), then Panauti (medieval Newari town with 40 temples, 3 hours' walk from Namobuddha). One of the best cultural day hikes in Nepal.
9. Sankhu to Nagarkot Hike
Altitude: 2,175m (Nagarkot)
Distance: 12 km
Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: 5-6 hours
Transport: Taxi to Sankhu
Start in the medieval Newari town of Sankhu, visit the Bajrayogini Temple complex (Nepal's most powerful tantric Buddhist shrine), then hike up through pine forest and terraced farmland to Nagarkot for sunset and overnight. Sunrise the next morning from Nagarkot's ridge gives the famous Annapurna-to-Everest panorama.
10. Dhap Dam Hike
Altitude: 2,100m
Distance: 8 km round trip
Difficulty: Easy
Duration: 4 hours
Transport: Taxi to Sundarijal
Inside Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. The Dhap Dam is a small artificial reservoir that maintains the sacred Bagmati river flow during dry season. Easy forested hike with traditional villages and clear mountain streams. Great choice for families or active rest days.
Best season for Kathmandu day hikes
Year-round except monsoon (June-August), when leeches make the forests unpleasant. Best: October-March for clearest visibility. April-May for rhododendrons. December-February cold but stable.
Logistics tips
- Taxis vs. public buses: Most hikes have hourly local buses but taxis are easier (USD 8-15 each way for nearby trailheads).
- Permits: Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park requires an entry fee (NPR 100 for foreigners). Most other hikes are free.
- Food and water: Carry 1.5L of water and a packed lunch. Most trails have no shops above the trailhead.
- Guide: Not required for most hikes but recommended for first-time visitors who do not speak Nepali. We can arrange.
- Phone signal: Good on most ridges. NTC works better than Ncell in the hills.
Multi-day extensions
Most of these day hikes can be linked into 2-3 day mini-treks:
- 2-day: Chisapani-Nagarkot
- 3-day: Chisopani-Nagarkot-Dhulikhel-Namobuddha (the "Kathmandu Valley Cultural Trek")
- 5-day: Add Phulchowki and Chandragiri for a complete valley rim circuit
In summary
Kathmandu Valley has more excellent day hiking within an hour of the city centre than most capital cities on the planet. Whether you have one free day before your main trek or a week to explore the cultural side of Nepal, these 10 hikes cover the full range - from gentle temple walks to demanding ridge climbs with snow-peak panoramas.
For first-time visitors, our recommended order is: Shivapuri Peak (acclimatisation), Namobuddha (cultural), Nagarkot (sunrise). Three days, three perspectives on what makes the Kathmandu Valley one of the world's great hiking destinations.
