Kirtipur Day Trip: Kathmandu's Living Newari Hill Town

Most visitors fly into Kathmandu, tick off the big three UNESCO sites, then head for the mountains. We always nudge our guests to keep one slow half-day aside for Kirtipur, a hilltop Newari town on the valley's southern edge that still feels gloriously undiscovered. It is layered with history, temples and quiet lanes, and it makes a perfect easy day either side of a trek. As a Kathmandu-based team, this is one of our favourite local escapes to recommend.

Why Kirtipur matters

Kirtipur is a stronghold of Newari culture, the indigenous community of the Kathmandu Valley, and its history runs deep. The town features in the unification campaigns of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, and local memory honours Queen Kirti Laxmi, whose resolve during those conflicts became a symbol of women's strength. Walking its lanes, you are stepping through centuries of valley history that the busier sites simply do not capture.

How to get to Kirtipur

Reaching Kirtipur is easy:

• By motorbike or taxi: around 40 minutes from Boudha
• By public bus: roughly 30 minutes from Ratna Park

Arrive at Nayabazar, grab breakfast, and aim to explore the heritage sites in the soft light of 8-9 AM, the best window for photography. From Nayabazar, walk about 100 metres along the main road, then turn right onto a narrow trail marked by water taps and stupas, climbing up through the old residential quarter toward the main monuments.

What to see in Kirtipur

Chilancho Stupa

Built in 1514 CE by Mahapatra Jagatal Varma, this Buddhist monument echoes Swayambhunath while keeping its own character. It is ringed by old Newari houses and monasteries, and in the mornings you may hear Newari women singing traditional devotional songs (bajan).

Lohan Dega

This Shikhara-style temple from 1663 CE serves both Buddhist and Hindu devotees. It sits just west of Chilancho Stupa, about five minutes away via the western gate, with two large standing Buddha statues nearby.

Dev Pukku and the Narayan Temple

A pretty pond surrounded by a busy local market, with the Narayan Temple to the north housing statues of Lord Vishnu. It is a natural waypoint as you head toward Bagh Bhairab.

Bagh Bhairab Temple

The town's centrepiece, a striking three-storey rectangular temple covered in intricate wood and metalwork. The inner sanctum (housing the tiger-faced Bhairab deity) is closed to foreign visitors, but the third floor displays weapons from 18th-century conflicts, and the rear offers a sweeping panorama of the Kathmandu Valley.

Uma Maheshwar Temple

Standing at Kirtipur's highest point, this three-storey temple was first built in 1663 CE and rebuilt after later disasters. Climb the 50-metre staircase, with rest spots along the way, for one of the best viewpoints over the valley.

Shri Kirti Vihar

A serene Thai-style Theravada Buddhist monastery built in 1975 CE, on the right as you first approach from Nayabazar.

How to plan your visit

A relaxed Kirtipur tour takes about half a day. If you have more time, extend to nearby Chobar Danda and Manjushree Park. Wherever you wander, treat yourself to authentic Newari cuisine, the town's small eateries serve some of the most distinctive food in the valley.
